The honest version of a startup list does not pretend every seed is a Series B, and it does not stack conflicting dollar figures into one impressive number. This list was cut from a pool of 15 Investigator-verified candidates and ranked by three things: the most recent verified raise or institutional traction, a clear North Carolina headquarters or operations, and a product in market or named customers where a source supports it.
Scale-ups stay eligible but are labeled, because a company that has raised for eight years is not the same risk picture as a seed-stage founder. Industrial and hardware companies count when they are North Carolina and tech-core, because the state's AI story is not only software. Rankings are editorial judgments from a verified evidence pool. Not a paid list. Every company links to its own site, and every figure traces to the named source.
1. Vulcan Elements — Durham/RTP · industrial magnets · scale-up flag
Vulcan Elements raised a $65 million Series A in August 2025. A separate SEC Form D from April 2026 shows roughly $430.7 million sold of $545 million offered. Do not equate the Form D to the Series A; they are different instruments. The $1.4 billion partnership language floating around is diligence-unfinished. Not AI software, and it doesn't need to be.
2. Lucid Bots — Charlotte · cleaning drones · later-stage
Lucid Bots raised a $20 million Series B in March 2026, about $34 million total per coverage. Y Combinator 2018. Physical AI and robotics, with a product people actually buy.
3. Keebler Health — Durham · LLM risk adjustment
Keebler Health raised a $16 million Series A in April 2026, about $23 million to date per the CEO. Named customers: Bloom Healthcare and Longevity Health Plan. Healthcare AI with receipts.
4. InsightFinder AI — Durham/Raleigh · agent observability · scale-up flag (~2015)
InsightFinder AI raised a $15 million Series B in April 2026. Customers cited include UBS, NBCU, Lenovo, Dell, Google Cloud, and Comcast. A decade in, this is a company, not a bet.
5. Skillmaker.ai — Wilmington/Carolina Beach · AI + XR trades training
Skillmaker.ai raised a $4.5 million seed in June 2026. Named adopters: Black's Tire and Southeastern Community College. Ignore earlier February talk of different round sizes; the June filing is the number.
6. Finley — Wilmington · AI virtual CFO
Finley raised a $1.85 million pre-seed on Aug. 14, 2026, from Cofounders Capital. The freshest Eastern NC fintech AI signal on the list, and the most honest entry: no named customers found yet. Fresh capital, unproven market, that's what a pre-seed is.
7. Nuream — Wilmington · fabric-sensor sleep/neuro
Nuream received an NC IDEA SEED grant of $50,000 in May 2026. Pre-market. The roughly $1 million figure in some coverage is research grant language, not equity. Different thing.
8. Phaseshift — Wake Forest · industrial/BESS + agentic AI
Phaseshift received an NC IDEA SEED grant of $50,000 in May 2026. No named customers or priced equity found beyond the grant. Battery energy storage plus agentic AI is a real thesis; the evidence is still early.
9. RoboLeanX — Charlotte · manufacturing physical AI
RoboLeanX is a RAP XXII alum, bootstrapped, and raising a pre-seed. No named customer locked. One to watch when the round closes.
10. QuantumBloom (formerly Launched2Lead) — Apex · STEM/AI-readiness workforce
QuantumBloom is revenue-funded, and despite the name, not quantum computing. Unnamed Fortune 500 clients, so treat the customer claims carefully until they're named.
Honorable mentions: NeuroTech Insights (Wilmington, Tweener Fund, a "$2 million preferred" that is unconfirmed closed) · Troupe AI (Raleigh) · NeuroFin Inc. bizzOS (Charlotte RAP award, no priced round) · Beam Dynamics (Winston-Salem) · Blue Sky Robotics (Chapel Hill, small Form D plus a separate town incentive).
Dropped on purpose: nCino, because it's public; anything with a Virginia HQ or unresolved HQ; and the India Neurofin AI confusion, which is a different company that keeps getting mixed in.
Where the capital is going
The list shows where capital is actually concentrating: a Triangle heavy on deep tech and healthcare AI, a Charlotte lane in robotics and fintech, and a Wilmington corridor that keeps producing seed-stage names. A $50,000 grant is a $50,000 grant. Calling it a round is how trust dies.
What to watch
- Vulcan's Form D path. Whether the offering closes and what the $1.4 billion partnership language becomes.
- Keebler's customer expansion. Risk adjustment is a regulatory tailwind; named health plans are the proof.
- Skillmaker and the trades. Black's Tire and Southeastern CC are real deployments; the question is repeatability.
- Finley's first customers. Pre-seed from Cofounders Capital, then the market answers.
- Nuream and Phaseshift's next moves. Grant to priced round, or grant to grant.
